In the region of La Liberdad, in Peru, most physically and mentally disabled children do not receive the attention they need in order to develop and build self confidence. It is common for disabled children to stay at home, cut off from the rest of society. This is often the case since the parents of the disabled children are ashamed of them and do not believe in the importance of education. A specialized school has been developed in order to help these marginalized children. The curriculum is structured around basic school subjects and it promotes a practical approach to learning. This is accomplished by organizing various workshops which allow the students to acquire new skills and develop confidence, self esteem and autonomy. If you are the type of person who loves a challenge and would like to work towards improving the lives of these wonderful children, then this is a project for you! The school staff could definitely use extra help in order to run the workshops (sewing, bakery and cabinet making), teach basic school subjects, supervise the children and organize activities. Your participation in this project will be an unforgettable life experience for you. In addition, you will have the opportunity to share in the daily life of these children who are so eager to learn. |
